Mounts on the glass

Cat window hammock with suction cups

A suction-cup window hammock mounts on the pane itself, at whatever height you choose. It needs 50.5 cm — just under 20 inches — of smooth glass, measured across the cups and arms, not the 45 cm the bed size suggests. That is the only real constraint.

It mounts straight onto the glass — no sill needed, nothing drilled. Four cups, a 45 × 30 cm bed, and one measurement to check.

The measurement that decides: 50.5 cm, not 45

The bed is 45 × 30 cm. But the two arms carrying the cups stick out on either side, and the whole thing needs 50.5 cm of smooth glass between the frames — just under 20 inches. That is the number to take with a tape measure before you order.

You will not find it on any product listing on the market. We publish it because it is the question we get asked most — and because a buyer told us she had ordered without knowing it, hoping it would fit.

Clean the glass first. That is what separates a mount that holds for months from one that lets go after a week. Greasy glass stops the vacuum forming under the cup. Warm water, a cloth, then let it dry.

Press the center of each cup, not the rim, until you see the disc flatten. Then load the bed gradually with your hand before letting the cat up on it.

Pick the height around your cat's jump. A stepping stone on the way up — an armrest, a dresser, a radiator — keeps the spot reachable for an older cat.

What buyers report

Almost every review is about how well the cups hold. "Good quality, very strong suction cups, they take the cat's weight easily and my cat is not exactly small," one of them sums up. Another describes two cats settled on the bed at the same time.

Two fabrics, two seasons

Beige mesh or gray plush. It is not only a matter of shade: the mesh is open and lets air through, which suits hot days behind a sun-facing pane; the plush is solid and warmer, and earns its place from November on. A cat chasing August sun and a cat chasing December warmth do not want the same surface.

How much weight does it take?

No maximum load is published for this model. What we can report instead is what buyers describe: two cats on the bed at the same time, somewhere around 11 kg / 24 lb between them, and one buyer noting that his cat "is not exactly small". The reviews that mention a cup letting go all describe badly prepared glass, never a cat that was too heavy.

The physics points the same way. A cup properly seated on clean glass holds by atmospheric pressure, and that pressure does not care how much weight you ask of it until you reach the point where it peels. What makes one fail is air getting in — a speck of dust, a film of grease, a hairline scratch — long before load does.

The practical advice: press down on the bed with your hand, firmly, before letting the cat up the first time. If it holds under your palm, it will hold under him.

Windows it will not hold on

This is the detail that decides whether it works on your window, and it appears on no product listing. A suction cup needs a surface that is smooth, non-porous and continuous. Three cases cause trouble:

  • Frosted or sandblasted glass — bathrooms, some doors. The grain, however fine, lets air through: the cup holds for a few hours and then peels off.
  • Patterned or textured glass, with raised motifs. Same problem, more obvious.
  • Solar film and privacy film. The cup holds on the film — and the film eventually lets go of the glass, taking the hammock with it.

On ordinary double glazing there is no difficulty at all: the inner surface, perfectly smooth, is what takes the cups. The question is never the thickness of the unit, always the state of the face.

Looking after the bed and the cups

The mesh bed lifts out of its frame and hand washes in warm water with a mild soap. It dries fast because it is open; keep it out of the tumble dryer, which distorts the tensioning elastics. The plush face takes longer — give it a night, laid flat.

The cups want one small job every two or three months: peel them off, wipe the disc and the glass with a damp cloth, let both dry, press them back. That single habit is what separates a mount that lasts a season from one that lasts years. A cup that starts "creeping" a few millimeters a day is not worn out — it is dirty.

If the disc has hardened over time — it happens in full sun behind a south-facing pane — a minute under hot water brings back its flexibility and its grip.

Questions about the suction-cup model

Exactly how much glass does it need?

50.5 cm — just under 20 inches — of smooth glass between the frames, measured across the cups and arms. The bed alone is 45 cm, but that figure is not what decides whether it fits.

Does it hold on double glazing?

Yes. Suction cups grip any smooth, clean glass surface whatever its thickness. What matters is the state of the surface, never how many panes are behind it.

Can I take it down and move it?

As many times as you like, and it leaves no mark. Just clean the glass again each time you remount it.

Does it fold?

The bed folds flat against the pane to free the window, without taking the cups off.
