Hanging cat bed: what suspension actually changes
A hanging bed is often described as a cushion lifted off the ground. That undersells it: the lift and the give do different jobs, and it is worth separating them.
What the air underneath does
A bed on the floor conducts. In winter it draws heat out of the cat into a cold surface; in summer, pressed against a warm one, it traps heat with nowhere for it to go. Suspending it puts a layer of moving air on the underside, and that changes the arithmetic in both directions.
It matters most in the two places cats actually choose. Behind glass in July, an open mesh surface with air passing through stays markedly cooler than a thick pad in the same spot. In front of a radiator in January, a suspended bed sits in the rising warm air without the cat ever touching the metal — which is the entire principle of the radiator model.
What the give does
A flat board holds a cat up. A slightly slack surface takes its shape and cups the flanks, and that is the difference between a cat sitting on something and a cat sleeping in it.
It is not a marketing idea. The Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines published by the AAFP and the ISFM describe the ideal perch as elevated, padded, and having a hammock-style depression that provides a sense of concealment — and ask that it be wide and long enough for the cat to stretch out fully. Shape and size, not just height.

Give is not the same as wobble
This is where hanging beds are most often got wrong. Stability matters more to a cat than softness: it presses a surface before committing, and if the whole thing moves it gives up and does not come back easily.
So the fabric should give and the mount should not. On all three of ours the frame holds the bed rigid — the dip comes from the surface, never from the fixing. On the suction model that means pressing the cups onto clean, degreased glass and loading the platform by hand before letting the cat up. A rushed fitting is paid for with a lasting refusal.
What it hangs from
Nothing goes into the ceiling and nothing goes into the wall. Each mount borrows something the room already has.

All three come off without leaving a mark, which is what makes them work in a rental and what lets you move the bed when the first position turns out to be wrong.
Choosing the surface for the season
Suspension helps in both directions, but the fabric decides how much.
Open mesh lets air through and is the default for a south-facing window, where a solid pad behind glass becomes an oven. Plush holds heat against the cat and suits a cold room or a north-facing pane. Cotton canvas sits between the two and is the only one of the three that comes off and machine washes at 30 °C.
Households with a sunny window often keep two surfaces and swap them, which costs less between them than one bed the cat abandons in August.
Where a hanging bed earns its place
In a small flat, mostly. A suspended bed adds a usable living area without taking an inch of floor, which is the only way to increase a cat's real territory short of moving. Two posts facing different ways beat one premium bed in the wrong place, because a cat follows the sun through the day and relocates several times.

Getting a cat into a new one
A cat inspects anything new for two or three days before lying on it, and looks thoroughly uninterested meanwhile. Put something on the surface that already carries its scent, and fit the bed while the cat is in the room rather than letting it find an object that appeared during an absence. Then leave it alone — placing a cat on a new bed by hand teaches it that the bed means being handled.
Which one to hang

What does hanging actually change?
Two things. Air circulates underneath instead of the bed sitting against a cold floor or hot metal, which matters in both directions across the year. And a suspended surface dips under the cat and cups its flanks rather than holding it flat.
Does it hang from the ceiling?
No. All three of ours take their load from something already in the room: suction cups on the glass, a clamp on a sill or furniture edge, or hooks over a radiator. Nothing is screwed into a ceiling or a wall.
Does a hanging bed swing?
It should not. Stability matters more to a cat than softness — it tests a surface before settling, and if it feels movement on the first press it leaves. The frames hold the bed rigid; it is the fabric that gives, not the mount.
Is it warm in winter and cool in summer?
